Archie SHEPP

(1937)

With a career spanning more than sixty years, over a hundred albums as a leader and historic collaborations with John Coltrane and Cecil Taylor, Archie Shepp is one of the last living legends of jazz. As a saxophonist, pianist, singer, composer, poet, playwright and civil rights activist, Archie Shepp embodies the many facets of modern jazz. One of the heroes of the 1960s avant-garde, he celebrated his African roots in the following decade, before returning in recent years to a more accessible jazz style, even flirting with R&B. Archie Shepp was also a university professor for over 30 years, teaching the history of jazz and African-American culture.
